Fair fashion sets a precedent
The Uniform Collection by Anna-Kathrin Heitz
"It can always be better!" - I know this as a fashion designer in fast-paced Berlin, I know this from my past as a human resources controller and project manager, I know this as a mother of two children. In our search for a suitable school for our offspring, my husband and I found the Berlin British School. A decision that we are still very happy with today. The principle of uniform school clothing was unusual for us, but if it strengthens the sense of community and pushes social inequality into the background, that is a good thing.
Since I intensively focused on sustainability in the textile industry during my fashion design studies and later in my job at various labels, I would like to offer the school and parents a sustainable alternative produced in Europe.
I traveled through several European countries to find reliable factories that were also committed to responsible manufacturing. After numerous visits, the decision was finally made for northern Portugal as the new production location. The family-run businesses there impressed me with fair working conditions, environmental awareness, and personal communication, which should make the detailed coordination of the new school uniforms much easier.
As part of this transition, I slightly optimized and standardized the classic designs for the Uniform Collection. This not only ensures fair working conditions and a sustainable European value chain, but also significantly improves the quality of the fabric and its processing, as well as, ultimately, comfort. The higher, yet reasonable selling price reflects the additional costs of fair and sustainable production. The polo shirts, sweaters, T-shirts, skirts, dresses, pants, and shorts are now available in all sizes and are shipped directly from Berlin after ordering in the online shop. From fast fashion to fair fashion – yet with significantly shorter delivery times. There's always room for improvement!
About our productions in Portugal
Ricardo, José, Alexandra and Luis are our direct contacts on site in the north of Portugal. They run the companies founded by their families and attach great importance to sustainability, continuing the tradition of the clothing industry in Portugal and fair working conditions for their long-standing employees. Starting with the choice of fabric, the dyeing works and the production of the clothing, all ecological standards are observed. We are very happy to work with these professional and trustworthy partners.
